I am gathering parts right now to build my first upper.

I am using a 20 inch RRA varmint barrel and a mega upper.

What free float would you suggest?

What length do I need?

What length gas tube?

Anything else I should know before I start my first upper?

Thanks for your help!

Do you want a rail for attachments, or just a typical round FF tube?

If you want a rail - go LaRue (assuming they will fit over a varmint profile) in 12.0 or 13.2 (covering gas block)

If you dont need a rail - go budget.... get the FF tube from RRA - for $75.

If you want middle of the road quality, with a rail, YHM makes some good choices.

Are you going to hang stuff off of the rail?

If not

May I suggest carbon fiber

You can try the YHM modular tube.  You can keep it plain or add rails where you need them, for bipod or sling swivel etc.  The one in the picture is rifle length on a 16" barrel.

If you are using a 20" barrel you will need a rifle length gas tube.

Are there any drawbacks to this tube?

The only drawbacks to the YHM tubes is they are a bit heavier than others (non-issue on a varmint rifle) and they dont have the same quality of anti-rotation mechanisms for rough combat use (again, non-issue for a varmint weapon)

They use an aluminum barrel nut, which some dont like... I think they are great for a budget float tube when better/fancier specs are not required for the weapon's deployment.

Until recently they didn't have any at all. While I agree the anti rotation screws aren't going to be as sturdy as Larue or DD they are better than nothing.

Briley carbon fiber for $70! It's currently on sale and looks great. You need a good strap wrench like the Rigid ($30) to install it.

I also have the DPMS, but it was a hair too long for my 20" and I had to trim the front sight to get it to really free float. Otherwise it was a fine cheap alternative ($50).
