I need to pull the 20" HBAR off my A1 upper and change it to a carbine barrel. Any reason I need to buy the receiver block kit or can I just do this with barrel blocks? I doubt I will be assembling more than 3 ARs total. I just don't want to warp the receiver obviously. I don't want to invest a lot in tools if I don't need them - as I said, maybe 2 - 3 builds at most. Thanks.

When removing the barrel nut you need to have the receiver held firmly because that is what the nut is threaded on to.  If you have the barrel isolated and crank on the nut, the receiver can still move and you risk widening the barrel-indexing notch in the receiver.

If you only plan on doing a few builds check the EE, and see if anyone is selling an action block.  If you buy one and don't need it, you could always sell it and get some of your money back.

So I could install a barrel with the barrel blocks, but should use the action block to remove the barrel? Thanks - just what I was looking for. I didn't want to damage the receiver!

Some folks have "gotten by" (if you have a flattop upper and a good vise) by using wood blocks on top and bottom of the upper, and clamping that sideways into the vise.

Me?  I'd go ahead and drop the $45 or so on a real block.

Hey...I searched and searched and this seems to be the best deal out there - upper and lower block
Upper and Lower block package
Used mine to re-barrel several...good to go

So, if I go for the action block, I don't need the barrel blocks correct?

If all you're doing is a barrel swap then the action block should be fine.  If you're going to be removing a muzzle device or doing any other torque work on something attached to the barrel, you should really consider barrel blocks.  Cranking on a flash hider using only an action block runs the risk of damage.
