I have a DPMS Sweet Sixteen Bull Barrel and it's .223 SAAMI only. All of their Stainless Steel bull barrels are .223 and not 5.56 or Wylde. The .223 is a sporting chamber which is a little tighter and provides better accuracy. The major differences are in the freebore and lead. The freebore is a little different but the lead is about half the length of the 5.56 chamber lead. If you decide to go with a DPMS SS Bull barrel just make sure not to run too much 5.56 surplus through it. You can, but, prolong use to 5.56 pressure rounds may cause throat erosion and subsequent accuracy loss will follow. My 16" Stainless Bull barrel lets me shoot a cloverleaf at 100 yards. It's worth the money and will surprise you with its accuracy. |

It's not just DPMS, for for most manufacturers, in general match bull barrels are chambered for .223 Rem, and have the tighter match chambers. I don't remember seeing a bull barrel with 5.56 chamber. Also, bull barrels are usually stainless steel, due to its machinging characteristics. A bull barrel is usually used for precision shooting... why would someone buy one with a 5.56 chamber and blast surplus mil ammo? In general, "Government contour" barrels are 5.56 chambers. They are used for shooting military ammo, and few would chose one with the tighter .223 SAAMI chamber. It would not give reliable functioning in semi or full auto fire, and might have overpressure problems with 5.56 NATO ammo. The type of barrel that would be questioned is the HBAR type. Some may be 5.56, some may be .223 SAAMI, or Wylde. My DPMS barrels are 5.56 NATO. Don't assume any manufacturer make only one type. It depends on the type and purpose of the barrel. |
