Hi, I finished reading Kulek and McKee's "The AR-15 Complete Assembly Guide" and would like to put together an AR. I have looked through the pages here but still have a couple questions. I would like a rifle with: a collapsible CAR style stock (sling loop on top) upper with forward assist, attached carry handle, A1 sight 16" heavy barrel, chromed (no 203 cut) carbine length gas system A2 flash hider standard front sight I thought it would be fun to put the upper together myself as opposed to buying an assembled upper in a kit. I am having trouble finding parts kits that do not include uppers that are already assembled though. And when I price the parts individually the price is much more than a kit. Any pointers on where to go for parts kits or am I just wasting my time trying to put one together from parts. I am looking for a low price for this build and based on cost would not be 100% fixed on all of the above features. Any ideas about where to get what I am looking for? Thanks, Rube |

Just pick up a complete CAR kit. Get it with the A1 upper if you can find one, but if not just get it with the A2. Then take the A2 upper off and trade out with someone for an A1 or keep the A2 for later. When the BRD takes over you will be glad you already have that part. ETA: I just checked DEL-TON and the A1 upper is 35 bucks more than the A2 and 45 more than the flat top. Just get the flat top or A2 and trade out with someone. |

a collapsible CAR style stock (sling loop on top)-Essential arms upper with forward assist, attached carry handle, A1 sight-dpms 16" heavy barrel, chromed (no 203 cut)-lowest cost is probably J&T carbine length gas system-comes with barrel A2 flash hider-comes with barrel standard front sight-comes with barrel You're right that building it yourself is cheaper than buying the kits often-however you have more control over what parts are put in. I bet if you call J&T or Del Ton they would sell you an unassembled upper if you want to put it together yourself for fun, worth a phone call anyways. DPMS is the only company that sells completely disassembled uppers that I can think of. |
Buy the upper assembled. PK Firearms or Bushmaster direct can provide you with HBAR A1 16" barreled uppers. In my experience, I have had some trouble with the barrel pin indexing slot on the upper receiver. Either the indexing slot has been too wide or off center. Either way, when you tighten your barrel nut (special tool needed), the front sight base may appear canted in relation to the rear sight. I have run into this enough that I mainly stick to factory assembled uppers only. Granted I have assembled a few barrels to uppers that aligned perfectly, however it has always been a crap shoot for me..... |
