I purchased a Mega lower, RRA NM 2 stage lower parts kit, Magpul MIAD and CTR. It's time for the upper. I like the CMMG 11.5". I like the weight of the gov't profile, but is there a perk to getting the medium profile bbl? I chose the 11.5 b/c I have plans to add a supressor to this rig. Also, will it work out to be cheaper for me to purchase parts for my upper piece by piece and assemble it myself, or is it better to just get a complete upper from CMMG? They offer every configuration that I desire, but I may opt for the Vltor VIS Mono. instead of the MUR with a seperate rail system. With this in mind, should I build myself? This is my first build. I'm not mechanically declined, but this is my first one so I'm apprehensive. Thanks! |

Last month I ordered and recieved a 16" uppper with YHM 4 rail free floater. Everything was great and they answered several questions quickly. I can't say that your experience will be exactly the same as mine, but I think I saved money by purchasing the upper fully assembled. I shopped around before puchasing. Good luck. --Sam |

One advantage to a heavier barrel on an SBR is weight distribution. Another is rigidity and heat tolerance. Whether or not these factors make a difference depends on how you are going to use them. If you're running a Beta C or continuous mag dumps, it might be pretty rough on that gov't profile. If you don't put your guns to this kind of use, I doubt you'd have any problem with the lighter profile barrel if it is more comfortable to you. Since you commented about building a VIS based SBR, here is my VIS-2 with a 9.5" heavy profile barrel.

CMMG 11.5" upper YHM QD 5.56 can YHM BUIS Comp ML3 in KAC mount M16 lower w/RRA 6-pos stock (probably going to get swapped for a VLTOR Clubfoot; I almost never use anything but the fully extended position)  I bought the 11.5" CMMG upper because I didn't want to put the can on this 10.5" upper. | I have a CMMG 10.3 MedCon upper. I went with the heavier barrel because I was putting a suppressor on it. Between the length and barrel diameter there is almost no POI shift with and without the can on. Personally I can't see spending the money on the Mono or MUR for a non-precision rig like an SBR. That being the case, I priced the options of building mine piece by piece or complete from CMMG. It was within $25, but that is not including the additional shipping charges from ordering from multiple vendors. I say just buy complete, you will only spend a few more dollars and then if there is ever an issue with it you have a full warranty on the complete upper. |
