I just received a basket case AR for a good price and would like to do my first ground up 'build'. The lower is a pre-pan (important for me) Olympic that shows handling marks, but is otherwise brand new. The gun is missing almost half its parts. It came with what appears to be brand new 16" lightweight barrel with fixed front site. The site has a "C" on it and the barrel is stamped "C MP 5.56 NATO 1/7". The handguard plate is round. The stock is a collapsable aluminum 2 position. The fire control group (now removed) is M-16 componets. I am missing the front flash hider and jam nut, gas tube and pin, bolt, carrier, all lower internals, stock latch, buffer tube spring, and grip. The upper is a slick sided A-1 configuration, no rear site, and this part is well used. My question to the knowledgable here: Would I be better off selling the usable parts and getting a whole kit from Del-tron/M&A, etc. and starting from scratch? Or would you piece the rest of this together? Also, how do I tell if the barrel is chrome lined? This build will eventually go to my son, so I am inclined to keep the 16" barrel, but I prefer the mid length gas system. Your guidance is appreciated. Thanks, Erik |

If the receiver "Had M16 parts" then its an M16......do you have paper work?????? Does your lower receiver have a hole above the selector? Email me a picture of what you have.....I think your better off selling..... and I think your lower receiver may need to be looked into....... |

If it's a standard AR lower (semi) then it can have those M16 parts as long as it's not a full auto. What it can't do it fire more than one shot with one trigger pull. Post photos and ask questions as long as it was a LEGAL ar to start with you should be fine to finish it out. BUT a slick sided one might part out for enough to get they new det-tron you want. |

Musky: The receiver is fine (no sear hole or modifications), original AR type. Except for light handling marks, it appears to be brand new. The M-16 parts in question were the trigger, selector/safety, and hammer. I have taken those out. I have 2 M-16s on Form 4s, so I'm OK with these parts until I can trade them off. I will try to post pictures of the upper receiver. The upper however is in fair shape. Some anodizing is worn off and there is light pitting on the left side. The receiver is an early gray color. What would a stripped, fair condition upper like this even be worth? Again, thanks for the help folks. Erik |

Slick side uppers are going between 80.00 to 150.00 with all the parts I think yours would be around 80.00 since its not complete. You should check the stock if its a Colt it could be worth something...... The "C" on your barrel should indicate Chrome. a picture would help. Sounds like you can get it running for around bolt and carrier 120.00 flash hider 8.00 crush 3.00 gas tube and pin 12.00 sight - 10.00 buffer and spring - 15.00 ------------------------------- 200.00 ish new parts you are going to put in 200.00 to get it running, and if the upper receiver doesn't appeal to you, I would sell off what you have and go new..... |

The stock is aluminum and looks to be unused. I cannot find any markings on it whatsoever. The stock is a gloss finish that I have not seen before. The buffer tube is only a two position. I am going to try to post pictures to see if this will help. You can refinish your upper and lower with Norrell's Molyresin www.molyresin.com in either black, or the Colt dark gray. They have both colors. Here's how: www.coloradoshooting.org/ar_refinishing.htm Most likely your stock with the shiny finish was made by Essential Arms, who were the OEM supplier to some manufacturers for that original style CAR-15 stock. www.essentialarms.com/Military%20Dimension%20Stock.htm ![]() "Aluminum CAR stocks, made by Essential Arms Co., are America's finest. Stock base and lever are polyester coated at 600° to insure a durable quality coating. Latch nuts are pinned through bolt shaft. Receiver lock nuts are steel. Buffer is aluminum with high mass inertia brakes and buffer tubes are clearance cut on front face." |
