| I built a stag arms lefty with a 16" barrel and a bushmaster shorty fixed stock...supposedly the shortest it could be without federal papers or the BATFE men coming after me. then a buddy bought a s&w ar with a three position stock and a 16" barrel from a big box store. I still need to measure his gun but I didn't think that was legal, if it is I would love to put a multi position on mine. |

I can't quote any law or statute, but I believe that the law regulates the length of the barrel, not the length of the overall rifle. So my belief is that you can put a 3 position collapsible stock on your 16" barreled weapon. If that is not true, then a lot of us are in deep kimshee, but I don't think that is the case. |

federal law states that all rifles must have a 16" bbl (shotguns, its 18" bbl), w/ an OAL of 26" for the entire rifle, even w/ the stock retracted h/w, there are a couple banned/anti-gun states that have further restricted the OAL...so check you states' laws FWIW: most 16in bbled ARs and collapsable stocks w/ em closed dont go below 28in OAL |
