Hello,
I decided to build my second ar this past weekend.  I have a spikes lower and bought a RRA LPK.  For the most part everything went well.  The only issue I had was getting th trigger guard roll pin into place.  I was using a punch set and most of it finaly went into place.  However there is about 2cm still sticking out that wont go any further. I also tried using the vise grips with tape as directed without luck.

According to the instruction on this board it said some times this part is not to spec.  It seems as if the pin is not going into the hole in the opposite end of the trigger guard.  Could this be my issue?  Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks for a great site!

are you backing up the ear on the bottom side?

Im not sure what you mean by that?  I have the ear on the other side stable as I use the punch and mallet.

He means is there something solid directly supporting the ear. It's not the toughest piece in a lower so it can be easily bent if not well supported. I always stick the roll pin in the freezer for a couple hours (same on the BHO roll pin) to shrink it just a bit, makes installation nice and easy and when it warms back up it expands nicely into place. I'd back the pin back out and check to ensure the holes all still line up just in case.

You can also lightly chamfer the leading edge of the pin with a piece of sandpaper. Takes about 15 seconds.

Also, make sure that the trigger guard hole is lined up properly. On my last build, I had a similar problem in that I couldn't get the roll pin to pressed into the hole.  Upon further troubleshooting the problem turned out to be that the trigger guard was not line up properly and the roll pin was impacting the side of the trigger guard. Once line up right, it went right in.

The best way to line up stuff like this is with a "dummy pin", which is a short pin just small enough to slide into the holes and hold everything together.  You then use the real pin to push the dummy out using a supporting block with a clearance hole under the pin.  If you plan on building a lot of rifles, you could get fancy & make a steel one.  I had a piece of plastic rod stock the right diameter that I cut up for my last two builds.  No muss, no fuss.

Try using a roll pin punch instead of a regular punch. Not sure if they sell these locally but i know snap-on and matco sell them.
