I've started to build the first of 3 AR's (one for each kid), just in case the Nov. elections go downhill. I received a 16 inch upper (non M4) from Blackthorne. ( I know-- Blackthorne! Eewww) So far the only gripe is that I ordered a lightweight barrel and I got a heavy. Nothing some time on a lathe won't cure. There is a slight step down in diameter about 2" or so in front of the barrel nut, I'm assuming that's about where the chamber ends. The barrel is straight until we get to the front sight then it steps down to .750. 1. Can I turn the barrel from the step over the chamber down to .750 all the way to the area where the front sight mounts, or do I need to leave a small ring for the front handguard cup to bear against? 2. The A2 upper is unmarked except for a mark on the carry handle just in front of the windage drum that looks like a slanted capital "A", or maybe a "4" superimposed on a slanted capitol "A". Any idea who made this upper? 3. Are A2 front sights cast or forged? Are some cast front sights better than others? 4. Could someone PLEASE tell me what "SPR" stands for. I can't figure it out for the life of me Sorry for the long post and thanks for helping me out, Brian |

Taking #2 The slanted A may look like it has an F growing out of it. It sounds like it was made by Alcoa Forge. They make a lot of uppers and carry handles for the major manufacturers. As to reprofiling the barrel ar15barrels.com may be able to answer your questions. He does reprofiling, has reasonable prices, does good work and has a reasonable turn around time. |
