If I were to get the 22lr conversion kit would I need a different barrel? Don't laugh,I really don't know.

Nope, but I have read that you might want to shoot a few 223/5.56 rounds after the .22's to get rid of some of the lead buildup from the 22's.

I was also told to shoot a .223 through it about every 100 .22 rounds to keep the gas tube clear.

You can do it either way.  My KPF upper has a real .22lr 1-16 twist barrel, but on my MG I just use a cheap Model 1 .223/5.56 1-9 twist barrel.

The KPF upper is very accurate so I don't use it for full auto, just target shooting.  The Model 1 upper I use on my MG is much less accurate, but who cares.  It's just for bullet squirting.

When I say my .223/5.56 barrel is much less accurate, I mean my groups are almost twice as large at 50 yards.  It's no big deal though.  You can still kill a pop bottle with either one.

If you buy a Ciener kit,  you can use the .223/5.56 barrel that's on your rifle now.  It will work.

You can use your existing barrel.  It isnt ideal for best accuracy, but will do fine for plinking at 25-50 yards.

The M261 manual recommends shooting a magazine of .223 every 400 rounds of .22lr to keep the gas tube clear, IIRC.  Most people think this is overkill.  I just run 5 rounds or so through the upper at the end of a shooting session.
