Torquing the nut to 30 lbs takes it just past horizontal for the two pins which lock in the handguard.

I don't think torquing it to 80+ lbs will get it almost all the way around again.

Do I need a shim or something?

I have several KACs...are you sure you got the "pins" in the proper location before tightening the screw?
