FSB Pins are tapered, make sure you are hitting the small end...

yup, hitting them from the small diameter side. it seems like the guys from factory whaled on the pins so much it seems fused.

I had that problem, you've got to have the right kind of punch.  You don't want a long slender one, you want the stubby one with a rather large point.  Lemme see if I can find a picture of what I used...

Soaked the pins in CLP for a few hours

Beat the small end with a BIG brass punch and a BIG hammer to get the pins loose.

Tapped them out with a roll punch.

The orange Brownells jig and a second person (thanks to my wife) to hold the upper helped immensely.

Exactly, use an oversized punch to get them started.

I fought a pair when I put mine together.  The key is, don't weenie around on them.  After I got the technique down, I ended up having to take them out about three or four more times with no problems.

Support properly on a STURDY bench/floor.  Get an oversized punch so you aren't breaking it and or slipping off everywhere.  Give each one a good solid whack right from the get go.  Trying to ease them out with cause you grief.

Keep a few spares around.  The ends of mine are getting boogered up.  They will need replacement soon.

What make? Some makers(Bushy) use locktite. Try heat or freeze it. I use a 2 lb. hammer with the FSB supported on a piece of oak flooring on a solid surface(concrete floor). Or get the dremmel out and cut the pins head off.
Good luck.

When i do em. If they dont come out on the first few swings of the 'big ol' hammer' i resort to derastic messures. Out comes the Dremmel to cut the ends off of the pins, so when i hit them they wont mushroom.

Oh by the way, i dont own any AR's that still have original FSB on. They all have gasblocks for flip or globe sights.

the upper is a Bravo Co 16" M4gery and i tried freezing it but it still wont budge, those bastads (referring to the pins). i think i might have to try and dremel the tips off the pin heads.

+1

I bought a nice 16oz Grace brass hammer for this purpose.  That, and a nice punch set.

Add a little heat with a propane torch, I have done it a number of times....it doesn't hurt the finish. Try direct the heat to the FSB at the pin locations. Don't get it red or anything, just get them hot.

I have actually had to cut off a bushy or 2.

Muffler gun with rivet attachment. I use it to rivet 1919's and it will remove ANY/ALL FSB pins

I use a 12ton press myself that I used for building AK's-works like a charm and it doesn't mar the pins.

I used the orange Brownells block for a while, but nothing beats this:

7500lbs of clamping pressure in the palm of your hand.
It's enough to actually split the tool-steel punch on Stag uppers from time to time.
No impact here like with a hammer, just pure force.

Hey Randall, weren't you going to put that Pin Popper on the market?  Anyone who has ever suffered trying to get a FSB of a Bushy would buy it in a heartbeat.  I know I would.

Do you reinstall the pins the same way?

I was going to.
Then I figured out that it's just not profitable to sell tools that reduce the need for people to send their barrels to me.

Tell you what...

I'll produce the drawings, put the part out to bid and start the process.
You front the money and handle the sales of them.
I just want 20% of each sale for my part of the work.

Just so we are clear, I'm talking about this:

This one is part of a $600 Kurt Vise and would not be economical to sell:

I had one of those FSB blocks but it would bind up on and bend the handguard end cap behind the FSB so I sent it back to Brownells.

Did you have the same problem?

Not after I milled out the slots a little bigger.

Thanks.

I had a huge problem getting my bushmaster dissipator FSB off.  I ended up have to take off some material to get the pins out.
