I am looking for a good gunsmith to cut/recrown/rethread a 16" bbl down to 14.5" bbl and perm install a phantom flash hider. The barrel is a RRA chrome lined chrome moly lightweight (R4) carbine 16". Anyone know of a good/reputable gunsmith with descent turnaround time?

I dont know where you live so....  Northern Virginia Gunworks. Springfield area off Alban Rd. threaded my post ban 16" Bushy and installed a phantom for me.  A little over a week.  I would go by or call and see what the wait time is before you turn over your barrel.  He could be pretty busy.  Sandy and Robert do excellent work.  Ask up front for an estimated price and turn around time.

and +1 for Ar15barrels/ just pay shipping...

Hmmm,  Thats strange.  If you are talking about Northern Virginia Gunworks they just did mine last year.  Oh well, maybe they changed what kind of work they do now.  I planned on going there to get another barrel done because I was so pleased with the work they did last time.  Sorry for the goose chase.

you may want to rethink cutting and recrowning a chrome lined barrel. you are going to damage the chrome at the muzzle and the results will be an inaccurate gun.just my guess.

Nope ,its np to cut/recrown/rethread a 16" bbl.Its a completely different process of chroming than that which is used on your truck bumper( pulled out of my memory from a previous thread...)

Get up with Randall at AR15barrels.com , he'll take care of you, does great work(highly recommended here @ARFCOM. From the looks of his price list of shop services youll get off decently cheap.

Nope, won't damage it at all. I hear AR15 Barrels does good work.....don't know about turn time, but probably good. Adco Firearms can do it as well, with 6 to 8 days turn time (that is to us and back to you) depending on shipping delays (carriers). You can check Shop Services here.

Here is my dillema.....I have a 16" bbl chrome lined chrome moly barell. I want to cut it down to 14.5" and perm install a phantom. I also want to install a Larue low pro gas block and Larue 9.0" ff handguard. Now, do you install the gas block then the handguard then the perm phantom? Or the gas block then the phantom and hope the handguard will slide over both? I dont want to change handguards because I love the Larue. Can anyone help me some answers? Im not quite sure what will work. Thanks.

Some other people have said otherwise in this thread

I get $45 to shorten and thread.
This INCLUDES a crown job as well.
I guarantee the crown will be in equal or better condition when you get it back from me.

The upper has to be mostly assembled before the muzzle device gets permanent attached.
At a minimum, the barrel nut and gas block need to be in place.
You would not be able to slide a low profile gas block past the permanent muzzle device.
You will not be able to get the LaRue barrel nut past the gas block if it were on the barrel when the muzzle device was permanent attached.
A LaRue handguard will slide over a LaRue gas block AND over a permanent phantom.

When I do this, I do all the machine work on the barrel, THEN build the upper, THEN permanent attach the muzzle device.

What parts would I need to send you, best method of shipping them to you and what is your turnaroud time from time you receve the parts? i live in VA and am interested in your services Mr. Rausch.

My barrel is a RRA 16" R4 profile Chrome lined chrome moly carbine
LaRue low pro gas block
LaRue 9.0 handguard

Also what would you charge to cut/thread/recrown/perm phantom/reparkerize barrel and if I sent all the parts to assemble barrel/handguard/gas block to the upper?

USPS Priority Mail is the preferred shipping method.
Turn-around is usually about a week.

If you send the upper already broken down, it's $45 to shorten and thread the barrel, $25 to assemble the upper, $50 for a permanent attached phantom and $15 return shipping.

If you sent a complete upper, it's $40 to tear down and rebuild, $45 to shorten and thread the barrel, $50 for a permanent attached phantom and $15 return shipping.

Sgt Rock,  That sounds like a good deal.  Thats about what I paid NVGW in Springfield (when they did that type of work) minus the shipping.  The turn around time sounds good also.  I might send one my barrels to Ar15barrels now.

If any of you guys are near VA Arms, they often send barrels to me in batches to save on combined shipping...

Thanks for the quick response. I will be receving all the parts needed in about 2 weeks and will be shipping them to you ASAP. Is the address on your website the one I should ship to? Also do you accept visa and is it ok to pay in full up front rather than a deposit/ then remaning balance upon completion?

All you need to do is complete a service order form.

The mailing and payment info are on the form and it will help you figure out the total.

No problem cutting and crowning chrome lined barrels.
I do about half a dozen of these every week.

It sounds like you're pretty busy...  When are you going to pony up for a CNC lathe?

Hi Randall,

I have a Bushmaster Partolmans Carbine (16") upper. If I send this to you would it be possible to do these services...

- remove A2 Flash hider and replace with a AK Concepts DTNC Muzzle Brake and permanently attach it (pin/weld). Have you ever pin/welded that compensator?

- install Larue 12" rail

- remove the bushmaster front sight tower and install a larue gas block

thanks,
mike

As soon as I move out of CA, get my manufacturer's FFL and get the mortgage on my future home under control.
I would love to have one now, but the machines I have looked at would never fit in the 10car garage I work out of now...
