| I notice when I shoot my Bushmaster on a very cold day there is a lot of water condensation in the bolt carrier. Bushmaster uses chrome lined bolt carriers so this is not that much of a problem. I can see this would not be good with a rifle that does not have a chrome lined carrier and is not cleaned right away. Anyway, here is my question.... I am looking for parts to make a 16" middy. Are there any manufactureres who do not use chrome lined bolt carriers? I just want to make sure I get one that is chrome lined, I will probably use one from RRA, CMT or CMMG. I can't find any answers on those company websites. Thanks. |

Yes, many makers have barrels that are not chrome lined. If chrome lining is something you want, make sure you specify at purchase. Edit: Silly me...........you did not ask about the barrel, did you.....of course you did not. I read 16" middy and ran with it. I will try harder to read the posts from now on. See below for answers from people who do read the posts.( carriers are chrome lined).

The kits from Del-Ton don't come with chrome bolts and carriers. Not to hijack the original post, but on a budget build, would it be worthwhile to spend $55 extra on a chrome bolt and carrier? What about $85 for a TiN bolt and carrier? Is a non-chromed bolt/carrier really that much of a handicap? |
He was talking about the bore (where the bolt goes) of the carrier. I don't really see an advantage to a chrome or TIN b/bc, except for slightly better wear.....but you would have to shoot many (tens of thousands) rounds for it to become apparent. |
I bet the carrier BORES are indeed chrome lined, if not stay away from them... Gas keys should ALSO be chrome lined. You don't want chrome anywhere else though. On the carrier, the parkerized finish helps hold the oil so vital to the operation of the AR. Going to chrome, you have less oil holding ability there. Also, chrome plated gas keys are a known issue as they are often too wide to fit in some receivers. Then you have the whole embrittlement issue if the chrome plating is not done correctly. You do NOT want your bolt brittle. |
I read somewhere that Del-ton uses CMT uppers and bolt carriers, so that may help to determine if any parts are chromed or not. |
