I'm going to be installing my first barrel in a few days. Is there a way to install a barrel without using a action block or the DPMS panther claw tool? If so can you explain.

You can use one of the barrel clamps but a receiver block is the best. They don't cost that much. I would look at the $35 or $40 spent on an action block as cheap insurance against ruining a barrel or upper.

Flat top or A2?

If a flat top - you can use two blocks of wood and rotate the upper 90 degrees so the wood/vise is touching the rail and bottom area of the upper.

it's a flat top. Would putting the wood blocks on the top/bottom result in any damage to either the top/bottom? Would putting some carpet padding between the wood and the upper help prevent damage?

Shouldnt.... but then - that is why they made Action blocks.

Carpet could damage it. If something is thick, it could allow the upper to spin and not hold it true. If you are concerned about scratches - a thin piece of felt, leather, or cloth would be better than something like carpet. An old leather belt would be ideal.

thanks for the input, a new semester is starting so I know I'm gonna need some $$$ for books but I really wanna finish this build by mid February at the latest so if i can save $40 on an action block that'll part of 1/3 of the BCG.

This will work well for you. Just make sure you keep the wood on the bottom BETWEEN the lugs (trust me, i did not specify that once and the guy complained that it did not work). Stick duct tape on the wood where it contacts the upper (although if the wood is clean it should not mark it in any way).

are the lugs where the pins go in to connect it to the lower? about how tight in the vise will i need this? thanks.
