I tried to do a search on crush washers, but nothing comes up.

I have used one once before when placing a flash suppressor on a barrel but have used peal washers with the last flash suppressors I have installed.  I am ready to place the flash suppressor on the barrel but I cannot remember if the cone shape faces the barrel or the suppressor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Concave side facing barrel, convex side facing muzzle. Hope that helps. This is one where the manufacturers could do a better job describing orientation. "Small side" just is not good technical writing for consumers. Does it matter, I don't know? But that is what the folks at YHM say.

It only matters if you do it wrong.

drfireant,
go to the Yankee Hills Machine website, then to the installation instructions link for the phantom flash hider. The PDF sheet makes it clear that the protruding side goes facing the barrel. This is contrary to what I understood. According to their instructions, which is not the best, the convex (protruding side) is facing the barrel flange (machined lip) toward the receiver.

Theoretically it does make a difference as the flash suppressor is slightly larger in diameter than the shoulder of the barrel just below the threads.  So, as you press against the crush washer, you want the smaller diamter side of the crush washer against the smaller diameter of the two surfaces, which is the shoulder around the threaded part of the barrel, and then have the larger surface of the two, which is the base of the flash suppressor. pressing against the larger diameter side of the crush washer.  The other way around might work, but you get better crushing of the crush washer, and hence, better holding of the flash suppressor.

I know how you feel

Thanks for all the responses.  I was planning to place the small protruding end towards the barrel end so it looks like I would have chosen right, but I really wanted to be sure.

I did go to the YHM website and looked at the directions and promptly saved a copy.  I will probably not place another flash hider on a barrel for several months, and more than likely I would ask my self the same question concerning the direction of the crush washer then.

Looks like I will break out the barrel wrench tomorrow.
