do clamp on FSB index on the original taper pin holes or do you just line it straigh up? i installed a YHM FF LTWT handgusrd today and i noticed when i put it back together the FSB was canted to the left.i think it has been like that.my rear iron sight was cranked a little to the left for origianal sightin.

There is no "indexing" with a clamp on style. Just take the scope off, set the rifle on a table upside down, loosen clamp "wiggle" the rifle (with slight down pressure) until the rear sight and front sight are even (both sides of then are touching the table), retighten the clamp. It should be straight after that.

I have wondered the same thing.  I am looking at changing out my front sight base for a rail base, but I have wondered how to properly index it.  Hopefully someone will help us out.

Damn.  That's too simple.

I've been screwing a piece of USGI cleaning rod into the front sight post hole and laying a square on the upper receiver, which is an idea I adopted from a technique I use to time FAL barrels to receivers.

I use a simple rod to align them.

I simply center the windage adjustment on my rear sight, then insert a laser boresighting device into the barrel. I move the FSB back and forth until the sights align with the laser dot, and tighten. Now I know that it will be "boresighted" when the windage is at zero, and require minimal adjustment when sighting in the rifle. After changing several FSB's and picatinny gas blocks, I find this is the easiest method for me.

I'm not trying to start anything here, but I wanted to pass along an opinion from Larry Vickers.

He mentions in a recent G&A article that a clamp-on FSB on a tactical rifle practically screams, "AMATEUR".  Apparently he believes taper pins are the only way to go.

I am when it comes to ARs! Surely all of the flip down sights i see on rifles are not all mounted on pinned gas blocks.?

Yeah, the SPR uses a PRI flip-up front sight and that's pretty amateur too...

That's exactly what I thought when I read his article!

My OE FSB being canted a little probably would not hurt a thing i zeroed back well but I know its canted and it bothers me! So i must fix it without sending it off.
At least the one i ordered is a 1 piece not 2!

I partially agree.  I mean... on a competition gun or Special Purpose whatever they might be adequate, but I wouldn't want clamp on for my fighting rifles.  That's just my preference!

Isnt that what makes U.S. great! We can all have our own opinion and not get beheaded for it.

The clamp on will do me fine.IM not headed for Irag with it.I can see the points made.less likely to move or get knocked off. wouldnt some LOC-Tite help keep a clamp on from moving?(not the permanent type)

If they would just make gas tubes that worked like the accordian style drinking straws, you could have a variable sight radius like a SLIDE TROM BONE! w00t!

You gotta think outside the box, brother!

I will agree......but here is a quote from ME: " If you ARE an amateur, try not to scream professional too loudly......someone might just call you on it."  So, that being said, when you become a professional.........get a different gas block. Let the holes in your target tell the story.
