Just began installing my Magpul enhanced trigger guard into my Bushmaster lower.  The old pin came out with a couple taps of the rubber mallet and punch.  The new roll pin went it OK for about the first 4/5 of the way, then stuck.  I don't want to force it the rest of the way with harder hammering (obviously!), but I can't figure out for the life of me how to finish the job without damaging something.  I looked at the tacked post above, and might try the squeeze method next.  Any tips, hints, etc.?  Thanks.

I always squeeze the starting end of the pin a little with pliers, CLP real good and lightly tap.  Never had a problem.  I bet the pin is just not perfectly aligned with the other hole.  When you get the pin in almost all the way (as you describe), there can be still a little play.  You are right not to force it, IMHO.  You might end up breaking the tab.

I also lube it up and then, using channelocks, squeeze it through the first ear. insert the TG and squeeze it the res of the way.
I've never used a hammer to install and have never had a problem.

Mine did the same thing, and I had to put it on the anvil side of my vise to get it to go the rest of the way in.  The "anvil" is the flat spot on the back of the vise, in case you didn't know its name either (I was finally told what it was a short while back), and I put duct tape over it to keep from scratching the lower.  If there is any bounce/give in the surface the lower is resting on while you're hammering, that pin's not going in the last 1/4 of the way - it'll just flare out on the end.

I have had a couple lately that had to be POUNDED in.  Magpul guards too.  They are using some oversized roll pins.  Shoulda just re-used your old one.

Be CAREFUL - you can break the ear off the lower if you arent.

Also - sometimes those magpul guards dont want to line up right, and keep the roll pin from locating correctly in the other side of the lower.  I had to pop the spring loaded side free to get the last one in, and then it would not snap back in place correctly.

Same here.  I hit it as hard as I dared  and it wouldn't start.  I had a new spare Bushmaster pin and it went right in.  Mine was a new build so I didn't have an 'old' pin to use, but I would've if I had one.

...So it sounds like either my trigger guard/the lower's pin hole aren't perfectly aligned, or my roll pin (the Magpul one) is slightly over-sized for my lower.  Partly glad that I'm not the only one who has had this problem.  This weekend I'll try some of the tips you guys have provided.  Thanks for all who responded.

I made sure I had enough support to protect the receiver flanges then gave the pin a few good whacks with a 3lb engineer hammer.

Unfortunately, that's the price I must pay...in order to pay for the price of the upper.
