what are the advantages to getting a rifle with a chrome-lined barrel over one that is not??

I will using it for target shooting at 100 yrds or less and for home defense.

Thanks!

Chromed lined is a bit more durable, easier to clean, and more resistant to fouling.  It's nice to have, but not necessary.  That said, I have two chrome lined barrels and one standard barrel and can't say I can really tell a difference between them as a matter of normal use. If you don't mind spending the extra $50, you might as well do it.  If you do mind spending the extra money, don't worry about it.

I stole this.

WHY DOES ARMALITE OFFER THREE TYPES OF BARRELS (CHROME MOLY, CHROME LINED, AND STAINLESS STEEL)

Because each barrel has advantages suited to different uses.

ArmaLite's Chrome Moly barrels have excellent internal surface finishes, and offer excellent accuracy for a reasonable price. Chrome lined barrels offer excellent corrosion protection and slightly longer life expectancy, but are more expensive than unchromed barrels. In addition, the process of electro polishing the barrels, and the chroming process itself, tend to reduce accuracy somewhat. Stainless is easy to process to fine surface finishes, and provides moderate corrosion resistance.

Chrome Moly is thus used for Eagle Arms' standard rifles, for good accuracy for beginners at a low price. ArmaLite A2 and A4 rifles, in either .223 or .308 caliber normally are produced with chrome lined barrels for hard service use under adverse conditions, with stainless steel as an option. All ArmaLite match grade rifles, the Ts and National Match rifles, are made with stainless steel barrels for superior accuracy and decent corrosion resistance.

oh yeah, chrome gives you uber tactical points.

At that range it won't matter (unless by 'target' you mean 5 shots and 1 hole)

Ya welcome

Go with the chrome lined. You never know when you may want to go to the beach and shoot some sharks. Corrosion is a M.F. (LOL).hug.gif I am in favor of chrome lined myself.

Luckily, in my area the sharks are smart enough to stay off our stretch of beach!

try a search

CL: more corrosion resistant, easier to clean, longer bbl life, may increase AR reliability

CM: more accurate (but not noticible by most users), usually cheaper

I've been in research mode myself as I am in the middle of my AR project.  From what I've learned, chrome lined barrels aren't necessary...their biggest advantage is that they're easier to clean.  The standard barrels are suppose to be a tad more accurate

I see you are in Or. (lots of rain) Go with crome lined. A bit more expensive but I think that liveing in a high mosture enviroment its worth the expene.

Their biggest advantage is that they last longer!

Their SECOND biggest advantage is that you don't have to clean them at all, unless you're just anal about such things.  I clean the barrel of my nearly 40 year old Colt SP1 carbine about every 600-700 rounds, more out of pity for the old gal than anything else.
