Do I need brass or steel punches, or both?  Which do you prefer and why?

Steel, IMHO.  Furthermore, get the craftsman set from Sears.  I've probably broken 4 of the smaller punches and with Craftsman you can return it for replacement locally.

Ditto, broken a few of them myself, all replaced FOC.

Yep as long as you don't tell them you broke it removing the snap ring from your Delta assembly, they're good with replacing them.

Yup...been there.  I bought one of them "Delta Ring C-Clamp pliers thingamajiger tools" and it's been much improved and easier process.
