A friend just ruined his old Colt SP1 upper with a hot reload. Luckily, no one was hurt. The upper "bulged out" on one side, and is pretty much unusable in my opinion. He would like to replace with the same SP1 type upper.

I've never worked on an SP1, but I'm assuming you'd have to replace bolt carrier and all since there is no forward assist on it, if you went to a newer upper with forward assist???

Anyway, does anyone know a source for an SP1 upper?

Thanks

Thanks...I checked out their catalog, but it shows it with a forward assist. I guess I was wrong in calling it an SP1. I thought those were the early ARs without the FA. I guess it's just an early A1 without FA.

Thanks for the reply.

CDNNs upper assys are NOT SP1, and I don't give a damn what they call them in their ad.  They are takeoff M16A1 uppers, with both the forward assist, AND a small front mounting hole that will not fit your friends early SP1 without the use of an adapter offset front pin. You are absolutely correct that the actual SP1s were smooth side, without the forward assist. Most of them, however, did have the notched bolt carriers, because once Colt went to the forward assist for the Army, all carriers were made with the notches, no matter what rifle they were going into.

The best way I know to find an actual SP1 big hole top is to keep an eye on the Equipment Exchange section of this site for awhile. They show up periodically, usually at decent prices.

Thanks... this is good info. I'm glad I haven't been wrong all these years. I'll keep a lookout for one to show up. Thanks again.

Do you need the complete upper or just the stripped upper?

Just a stripped upper would work.

I just got one from Sarco. They are small pin uppers like new.

Fulton Armory has the SP1/M16 style upper, small hole, no forward assist, no brass defletor.

Guys,

The man needs an upper for an SP1. THAT'S A BIG HOLE FRONT END. None of the pieces you're referring him to will fit, unless he uses one of those yucky adapter things.

And by the way, the Fulton Armory upper is nothing but a DPMS piece, and the latest word I get is that DPMS has discontinued the thing, though Fulron might still have some.

Thanks for the info Shamayim, I think I'm just going to refer my friend to our local AR custom shop for his repairs. I've pieced together several A2 ARs, but I think I'm out of my league with this historical rifle.  Thanks again for your input.
