| Would it be possible to build an AR (probably AR10) in .270? How practical would this be? More to the point, how expensive? I have a friend who wants to build one, but said he would prefer something a bit larger than .223, but still lighter than .308. Has anybody come across a conversion like this? What about mags? Thanks for any info that you can provide. |
Actually, after doing some super digging, I did find a company who will do 7mm and 300 WSM's but the $2300 + price tag is a bit out of his league accuracysystemsinc.com/ar10_supermagnum.html ETA: Which is why he would like to build one... |

The 270 winchester cartridge is too long for ANY AR-10 based rifles. Those 7mm and 300 mags are remington short action ultra mags which are the same loaded length as a 308. You can build an AR-10 in ANY of the 308 based cartridges, so 243, 260, 7-08 and 308. If your friend is dead-set on having a 270 caliber, i could wildcat him a 270-08 by chambering with a 260 and then coming in with a 270 neck and throat reamer. Of course your friend will need custom loading dies to reload for this. 7-08 and 260 ammo are available off the shelf. |
Thanks for the info ARB. So basically, all he needs is the stripped lower, the parts for the innerds, and then a .308 upper with a .308 based barrel? Have you tried any of those short mags or wildcats that everybody seems to be liking? Should I just try and talk him into a 6.8? Do the 6.8's have their own mag, or do they just use the .308 mags? Know how many will fit in there? |
I'm sure you should know this, but by the wording of your last post, I'm not so sure. There are two VERY different action sizes we are talking about here. AR-15's fit the 5.56 & 6.8 which are limited to 2.25" overall length. AR-10's fit the 308 cartridge family which is more like 2.75" long. (I forget the exact length) There is no 5.56 or 6.8 mags for an AR-10. 6.8 mags are available at several different capacities in the AR-15. 308 mags are available in 5/10/20 round capacity. |
Whoops! hehehe....that was a typo. Thanks for making sure though
