I've got a 16" barrel.  How tough is it to chop pff 5 inches and permanently attach a 5" flash hider?  Is it possible?  How much should a gunsmith charge for this?

thx

Not hard for a competent gunsmith. Check with ADCO and AR15barrels.com, both dealers here on the boards.

Figure $65.00 per hour for man and machine.

There are fake FH's that look just like the 5" hider, and sleeve over your barrel. With that, you wouldn't be pissing away the ballistics of your barrel by going down to a 11", but would retain the look of the 11.5" barrel.

Don't chop 5" off and attach a 5" FH, because you'll have a barrel less than 16".  Remember, you lose about 1/2-5/8" with barrel thread to FH engagement.

I would go with the slide over look alike. Why give up 5 inches of barrel. I kNOW it looks "EVIL" but go with the slide on IMO

Is this suppose to just look kool, or is there some advantages to it?  I have a commando with a 5" flash hider, I bought it that way.  It is a oler piece but is in like new shape.  No scratches at all and a A1 style.  Eddie

The longer flash hider works much better than the regular FH.  It virtually eliminates the signature.
