My issue M4A1 has a Diemaco Upper on it, as well as some other M4s in my unit; they are excellent quality uppers, you shouldn't have any problems with them.

it has an A on it in the groove in front of the rear sight adjustment

It sounds to me like you have a Diemaco C7 style upper.  All Diemaco uppers have the stylized D on them on the right hand side.  If it is a true Diemaco then you have an excellent quality upper.  If it's good enough for the armies of Canada, the Netherlands, Denmark, the SAS and Colt (when they run short on parts), then it should be up to snuff for your build.

here is an upper i have had for a while.  should be a Diemaco Kaiser from all the stuff i have read.  i have not seen a current production C7 so i dont know if they have the stylized D like the the picture above or not.  This one is going towards a C7 build.
