Please excuse if this is too basic but I'm thinking of building my first AR15 and I see references to preban and postban lowers. I've also read the article posted on this web site but that was dated in 1997. Am I correct that the preban postban issue is really a non-issue now that Clinton assault weapons law has expired? I can trick out my AR15 with all the evil toys of flash hiders, pistol grips, etc etc and the only thing I really need to comply with is the barrel lenght and of course I have to be semi-automatic?

Yeah, now that the AW ban is gone, you can put all the evil features on your AR-15 in all but a few states. Michigan has no state-level AW ban, so you are good to go.

If you have no state law you should be fine. Some states, like NY, still have a version of the old law so some places still sell postban style guns and kits.

Thank you. I pretty much thought that was the case but figured a dumb question was better than an interview with an ATF inspector!
