If you are coordinated, then this won't apply. If you fall into my category, then a detent pin installation tool helps from launching the detent pin into orbit around the earth. You don't have to spend $5 for one though, just purchase a clevis pin from your local hardware store..it is practically the same.

All the stuff that has been previously mentioned.
The two tricky areas are the bolt catch detent and the pivot pin detent.
The bolt catch detent is where your punch will slip off the pin and scratch or dent your lower.
The pivot pin detent, as mentioned, will go into orbit if you aren't careful.

I would use TWO vises.  A large one for assembly and then a small one for doing little stuff or other projects at the same time.  Make sure they are plenty far apart.  Also make sure both are situated for maximum versatility.

Other Tools:  Brownells AR-15 roll pin punch kit.  $19.99

Brownells AR-15 ROLL PIN STARTER PUNCH KIT $46.95  ( worth every damn penny if you want to do a smooth and professional installation of roll pins )

Quick unrelated question.
Does a gun that you build from parts have to be registered?I live in PA.

If you build on a factory-built lower receiver, then the lower will already be "registered" -- no further registering is required.

On the other hand, if you build on an 80% lower (which you complete yourself), there is no paper trail whatsoever. The only thing about this route is that the lower can never be sold.
