I am getting ready to build my first AR-15 (M-4 style).  Not only is this my first build, it is my first 5.56/.223.
So my questions are numerous and I welcome any advice.  Here are a few of my questions:
1.  Flat top or handle?
2.  Bull barrel or regular?
3.  Single stage trigger?
4.  Quad-rails up front if so, free floating or not?
5.  Steel or chrome lined barrel?
6.  Collapsable stock or fixed
I want iron sites and optical sites, which I am guessing would  make a handle carry more desireable than a flat top.  I also want to put a lighting system on it.  Anyway, pour on the comments.  Thanks.hinking.gif

1. Flat top
2. Regular Barrel if you are concerned about weight
3. I have never had a 2 stage so I cant answer.
4. I like a quad rail, if you are going to put one on you may as well free float.
5. Chrome (just my choice)
6. Collapable if you may use it for CQC.

What type of Optics are you looking for? If are going to put an EO Tech or Aimpoint, go with the flat top and use flip sights for you BUIS.

what type of shooting do you plan on doing?
what range do you want to shoot to?
what is your purpose for this rifle?
where will you be shooting this rifle?
how much do you want to spend?
what type of optics do you want?

Yeah, all those questions require more specifics from you.

Okay, sorry I was short on time this morning so I didn't get all of it out there.

I want to be able to use it in close quarter as well as ranges out to about 50 meters.
Price isn't that big of a deal.  I'm not going to break the bank, but I also have some good sources for parts.
The rifle would be for police patrol/active shooter
I would probably go EOTech or Aimpoint - We have the eotech on our FNP-90s at work and I like them for indoor/dark situations.  I'm not wild about them for bright sunlight at all.
I am want to configure the rifle so I can use filp up iron sites without having to alter or remove the optics.

1: Flat top
2: Regular barrel
3: I like two stage, but thats just my preference.
4: Might as well just free float it if you're going for the rails. (I'ts not too important though)
5:Chrome (I never heard of a steel lined barrel, I like to stick with what I know)
6: Collapsible

No worrys about the optics and Iron Sights. You can buy back-up irons and a good opticas well. With the carry handle, Its hard to get a cheek weld if you have optics on it. Plus, if you have a flat top you can just add a carry handle if you feel like it.

Just curious for the reasoning behind some of the answers:

1.  Why non-free float?
2.  Why chrome lined?
3.  Why regular barrel?

Not that I disagree, I am just curious as to the pros and cons.

1.  Why non-free float?  Easier to attach non-floated handguards to your rifle.
2.  Why chrome lined?  Easier to clean, will last longer, most people can never see an accuracy difference.
3.  Why regular barrel?  Lighter, easier to carry around/manuever.  At 50 meters, you'll have more than enough accuracy with a regular (gov./HBAR/M4) profile.

Not that I disagree, I am just curious as to the pros and cons.

Got it.  Thanks for the prompt reply.  I think you are saving me some real money here.

This is how I built my go-to carbine:  RRA Receivers, RRA lower parts, RRA collapsible 6-position stock, RRA bolt carrier group, CMMG 16" mod4 barrel (M4 profile, light under the handguards), YHM free float quad rail, LMT BUIS, Aimpoint M2 w/ARMS cantilever mount.  It's nice and reliable.

Bear in mind, if you get a 14.5" barrel with a permanently attached flash hider, it makes it complicated if you ever want to free float the barrel later.  You would have to grind away the weld over the set screw, remove the screw, unscrew the flash hider and then take off the front sight.  With a 16" barrel, all you have to do is unscrew the flash hider and then remove the front sight to attach the free float tube.  You don't have to F-up your flash hider in other words.  Check out this topic:  www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=226782, lots of good info.  MJD

Wow, Great insight.  I read the build it yourself deal and that was what convinced me to do it.  I was amazed at the simplicity of it, or at least seemingly so.  In some ways I thought about going basic for now and building it up later.  So, I really appreciate your advice.  I'll take all of it I can get.

Thanks again.
