i have an rock river arms 20" barrel that i am trying to remove the barrel extension. and i can not get it to move, i have removed the pin (was not into the barrel at all) and have put pb blaster pentrating flud on it , heated and it will not move. is it a left hand twist? hey i am trying to save the barrel, it has a over size chamber and i am trying to set the extension on it closer and then ream to pass the no go gauge check , it will eat the field gauge now. thanks kychas |

The barrel extension is torqued on at 175 ft lbs. Your going to need a long breaker bar, and a lot of ass to just spin it off. Unless you plan on making a barrel from scratch, don't bother trying to save the extension. P.S. A 5.56 nato barrel/chamber will swallow a 223 no-go gauge, so the barrel may be correctlly head spaced. |

At this point I am wondering why you want to salvage the barrel. I would put a releiving cut just behind the barrel shoulder, ala the standard way of removing an Enfield barrel, at the extension-barrel junction. That should allow you to take it off without much of a problem, but destroying the 12 dollar extension in the process. |
| To remove the barrel extension first you secure the barrel very tightly in a BARREL vise. Then you insert the barrel extension wrench available from Brownells and use a long wrench such as 24 inch Crescent wrench to break loose the barrel extension. There is NO set or prescribed torque value They have to be more than snug and fit tightly against the shoulder of the barrel. The barrel extension threads are 16 threads per inch, right twist. With the right tools this is a 5 minute project. |

You will very likely have to abandon your present gas port - thread, setscrew and weld over would work nicely - and drill a new one, properly indexed to your new indexing pin position. The reason is when you reinstall the extension, it will be in a different position when tight than the original. Is the bore and chamber chrome lined? |
