I will soon be replacing my current barrel with a new barrel. I'll be using the same bolt & carrier with the new one as I have been with the old one. Does anyone have any idea of how often headspacing issues come up when swapping out barrels of AR-15s? Is this typically a concern, and would it be considered highly unwise to swap in a new barrel without checking the headspace with a field gauge?

AR barrels are headspaced when made and barrel extension is fitted. So the real variable is your used bolt. How much is it worn, under spec or over spec. Even though I have no proof, I like a new bolt to go with my new barrels. Carrier's I just measure them and as long as they provide a good fit for bolt with new gas rings I run them.

I have had four barrels that were trouble to get a GO gauge to close on. Three I worked out by swapping bolts untill I found one that would close. One barrel I had to send back to the manufacturer because I could not find a bolt that would close on the gauge.  I have not had one yet that had to much headspace.
