I bought an unassembled DPMS chrome bolt and carrier from Midway and when I tried to assemble the bolt into the carrier, the tail on the bolt would not fit into the carrier. 30 minutes with a cratex wheel on a Dremel fixed the problem but in the process, I noticed that the interior machining was really poor on the carrier. I polished the tool marks out of the interior of the carrier. The overal quality was ok on the outside, but the inside was really rough. Quality control sucked!!

I'm sure Midway would have cheerfully exchanged the parts for me, but I was in a hurry to get rounds down range and it was easier to just fix it myself.

Happy to report my repairs were successful and the 80% lower along with the rest of the piece worked flawlessly for the first 80 rounds and the 20" bull barrel is throwing Wolf inside an 1 1/2" at a 100 yds....should get better with good ammo.  This is the 3rd complete 80% I've done and no reason to stop now!!

Just curious as to which jig you use and what 80% blanks you are using...  Interested in doing one myself and trying to get opinions from people who've done it...

could it have been that the gas rings needed to be worked in?

i usually have a hard time getting the bolt into the carrier because of new rings but after they do go in the bolt spins freely.

i have to agree with the rough walls of the bolt carrier, had one like that though it didnt hinder fuction.

i dont buy dpms no more cause i have  choice which to buy but have never ran into the problems you're having.

You can get better quality bolt/carrier assemblies from the vendors here for less than a DPMS bolt/carrier from Midway, for those interested.

RBprecision, Adco etc... offer RRA parts at reasonable prices and have fast shipping depending on where you are. I get stuff from Adco 1 day via USPS first class mail. 2 days for RB because they're in IL (I'm in SE MI).

Cast or forged lower?

Kind of off topic, but you mentioned it. I bought a cast one, will I regret it?

I've owned 2 DPMS bolt/carriers I purchased from Brownells unassembled. I had similar problems as well as burrs on the rear end that would ruin the face of the buffer. I have since stayed away from DPMS bolt/carriers. Their LPK's are ok, though.
