I went today to get the lube to put my barrel on and Lowes and a local autoparts store didn't have a clue. Then I did a web search and one site said Molybdenum-disulfide lube is  ANTISEIZE.
Is this right?

Disc brake anti squeal grease is what you’re buying (same pack that comes with set of disc brake shoes).
It's sold in little packets on the counters of auto parts stores, and one pack is enough to do about 6 barrels.

Engine assembly lube is another name for it, I think. The problem with that is that it comes in a big tube that you wouldn't use in three lifetime's of AR building.

Bushy sells the correct stuff for something like $5.  This "tube", or small plastic container will last you forever.

Word to the wise.  DO NOT GET THIS #$!@# on *anything* you don't want it on.  Its a major pain to remove it.  I'm mostly talking about clothing... a little solvent will remove it from your gun.

That article explains all this stuff.  There are other forms of more readily available grease you can use for this purpose...

I think he explains the grease part in the barrel change section.

Molybdenum-disulfide lube is ANTISEIZE.  Is this right?

It has antiseize qualities, but it is not the silver or copper looking goop (powdered metal suspended in grease, such as "Never-Seize").

Wheel bearing grease is what you want, if you can get it, the kind with moly disulfide.  This makes it look dark brown or gray.

I have something called Super Tech Extreme Pressure Moly-Lithium Grease.  On the back, it says "provides protection with molybdenum disulfide...,"  and it says that it's dark gray and lithium-based.  Is this moly grease?  Will it work?

I use brake caliper grease on my barrel nuts.  A little 2.5 oz tube of Sta-Lube has lasted me quite a while.

I use this stuff, lasts forever.

Avoid metal to metal contact during engine assembly.
Sealed Power engine assembly prelubes have been proven effective by more than 30 years of use on the assembly lines of U.S. car, truck, and off-road engine manufacturers. They are formulated especially for prelubrication of camshaft lobes and lifters (mechanical and hydraulic) prior to engine oil circulation. Also recommended for bearings, valve stems, rocker arms, push rod tips, and other metal-to-metal contact areas within the engine. Prelube increases load-carrying capacity of the engine oil during break-in to prevent scuffing and galling. The prelubes have special additives which withstand the extreme pressures exerted on cams and lifters. These easy flowing petroleum based lubes function as oil additives, which will not affect oil viscosity. They also hold fast to surfaces on which they are applied and won't run off like engine oil, even after prolonged storage time.

they sell it at most speed shops or auto stores. Just ask for engine assembly lube.

Yes, used similar myself.

What temperatures should it be rated for?  The Super Tech stuff says it should be fine up to 350 degrees.

That sounds about right.  IIRC thats what Moly Di lubes run to temp. wise.

If you go to Bushmaster.com you'll see the container of moly lube for $5 and its going to take 2-3 days to get to you.  Why not pay $5 for a container of the right stuff that will last you forever?

I picked up this grease today at WalMart for my latest build. The tube was under $2, pleanty to last a lifetime of builds and re-barrel jobs!

Might not be clear in the pic but it states right here that the grease contains Molybdenum-disulfide.

I use the same stuff Quib shows in the picture.  Works fine for me.

Yeah, the stuff in the pictures is what I was describing.  I'm glad it'll work, because I'd hate to waste that much grease.  I got mine from Wal-Mart, too, by the way.

Yea, your tip is what lead me to hit WalMart first. I thought I'd post pics to help out.

Thanks.

If I recall, we should avoid graphite in the lube - it "chews-up" aluminum.
I'd cehck the label carefully.

Nothing on the label hints at graphite in this lube. It's not even listed in the contents on the label. I'm sure it's safe.

Went to Walmart yesterday to pick up a tube of the super tech grease.

I'm just anal retentive enough to want something with moly di in it, but not dumb enough to pay 2-1/2 times as much for  a tiny jar.
I must admit, I haven't been in a Walmart in 2 years, but that's a different story!

Great tip!
