This is my first time really reading this site or posting here, but I am very interested in trying to build my own AR-15. Unfortunately, since I have only really dealt with handguns, I am kind of clueless as far as AR-15 parts, prices, and manufacturers go. Who are some good manufacturers that I should look for when trying to get the necessary parts? How much approximately, does everyone think that it will cost to build my own medium quality rifle (I know that top quality will be well out of my price range)? Hope that you don't find these questions too elementary and are willing to offer me advice. If you think of anything else that might be important that I left out, please feel free to add whatever you think is useful information. |

Welcome! Not too long ago, I was in the same place. I did a lot of research and asking questions. I contacted quite a few vendors and this is what I found: Eaglefirearms is the company that I purchased 99% of my parts from save for the lower that I bought locally. They are good folks to deal with and have great prices. They sell a lot of Rock River Arms stuff which many consider top quality. I would agree. My RRA midlength upper is very nicely made. I also talked with Del-Ton, DSG Arms, Adco, and Ameetec Arms. All were prompt and helpful and I would have no problem dealing with them in the future. I have also heard good things about Sabre Defence. Any of the companies above can supply you with a very high quality assembled and headspaced upper. All you would need to do is purchase a lower, lower parts kit, stock and some magazines and you should be good to go for the basics. You should be able to build a nice AR for $600-$650 depending on the options you select. Enough time spent on the Equipment Exchange can save you some money but you have to watch for the good deals as they go fast. Anyway, hope this helps. Have fun! |
Welcome to the boards. ![]() The first thing you need to know is that here in VA we've got a lot of active members who are available to help you build, upgrade, repair, etc your AR. We've also got people who can help you get up to speed on shooting it well. Come on over to the Virginia forums in the Hometown section and say hi. Next is the tacked threads in each forum include a lot of good answers to questions that get asked a lot, so reading them will get you off to a good start. Thirdly, the Equipment Exchange and the vendors listed in the Industry section all have some good prices on gear. With some carful shopping and a little patience you can build a good quality, reliable AR for a fairly low price. |
