This may be a bit of a dumb question.  I purchased a action block and it came with a internal plug with a T handle.  I assumed that this plug was to keep the receiver from collapsing when the clamp is tightened up, but it fits so loosely that the receiver would have been yielded  before it would stop anything. So what is the purpose of it?? The set did not come with any instructions.

Mine has a little play and rattles, slightly.

That is exactly what the insert is for.  The receiver will flex quite a bit.  USE the insert!

I never use that insert and have never damaged a receiver.  Besides, you can't align the barrel nut notch with that insert in the way.

I made a tool from a 2"-3" stub of an old gas tube.  Stick it in the bolt carrier key and slide the bolt carrier into the receiver.  The stub will poke out the gas tube port in the upper receiver and keep the spring clip, weld spring, and delta ring aligned.  With one hand push gently on the back of the BC, then just lean on the barrel wrench until stub pops through the notch in the barrel nut and you're perfectly aligned.  You can slide the BC back and forth to make sure it's not dragging.

And you thought barrel jobs were hard....
