OK.. quick question.. did a search and i know that if you have a shorter barrel, your velocity goes down, and i guess with a longer barrel your velocity goes up.   At what point is a barrel too long on a rifle, or at what point do you lose a gain in velocity?

I'm pretty much trying to decide on what i want to build next.  I have my M4gery done, and have fun shooting it on the weekends, but i'm thinking i want something i can really reach down the range with.  I was thinking of going with just a flat top upper and a gov'profile  20" but was wondering what exactly a 24" barrel would do for me.

It depends on the exact combo of powder and bullet, but for a 5.56 it is around 24" or 26".

A friend and I were shooting at a 1/4" thick steel plate at 200 yards.  I was using a 16" barrel and he was using a 20" barrel and we were using the same ammunition.  When we went down range to inspect the plate his rounds out of the 20" barrel were deep dimples some cracking through the plate.  The marks my 16" barrel were dramatically weaker hits wich produced shallow dimples.  I was suprised how much weaker the 223 round is out of a 16" barrel.  A 223 is proportionately a mini magnum and needs a 20"+ barrel to ring out all of its potential.  When I get a chance I will chronograph the two and see how many F.P.S. difference there is.

I belive that there is a chart showing the dimishing returns to scale of the 5.56 round somewhere in the ammunition forum.

Yeah.. i found a lot of Info on this board talking about the difference between a shoter barrel and a normal (20"), but not much on a 20" vs 24" or longer.

I know my M4gery has less velocity... that was one of the reasons i was looking for info on longer barrels.  I figure i have my close quaters rifle... was just trying to figure out what set up i would like to build next and was thinking that since i went 14.5 already.. might as well make something with a longer barrel.
