I finally got my J&T DS-4 kit today after waiting about 2 weeks. Excited to get her built, I started immediately. First, I go to put the trigger guard in. One light tap with the mallet and the pin breaks in half I then decide to inspect the upper assembly that they sent me assembled. I pull out the bolt and charging handle and look down the barrel and see somthing that initially looks like it might be a bit of packing material inside the barrel. I run the my bore snake though, take a look and its STILL THERE!. Looking closer, I think it might be a hole in the chrome lining!?! -John |
| i just finished my first build tonight too...had no problems with the kit...but the thing you see in the barrel...i called on it, they said it was left over from when the gas port was drilled, should shoot itself out in a few rounds....i ran the cleaning rod through mine a few dozen times, it finally came loose. Also had some trouble with the trigger pin...it didn't break, but i damn near needed a sledge hammer to get it in....it's in now, but not flush...may just file it down. |
Yes, there is a hole for the gas port, sometimes you can't see it. A new barrel will often have a burr at the gas port, it will be gone after you shoot it the first time.
I'm guessing you are talking about the trigger guard roll pin, J&T uses a coiled roll pin that goes in quite easily, unless you don't have the holes lined up properly, and if it's sticking out you obviously didn't use a roll pin punch, the right size roll pin punch will put that pin in flush without marking up the lower receiver. www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=5551&title=ROLL+PIN+PUNCHES 3/32 is #3 Roll pin punch (for bolt release pin) item #230-100-003 #3 Roll Pin Punch $3.75 1/8 is #4 Roll pin punch (for trigger guard pin) item #230-100-004 #4 Roll Pin Punch $3.83 Small item shipping $3.70 total delivered $11.28 |

When you put in the trigger guard, if the lower tab is not supported, you might break it as you drive in the roll pin. I don't use a punch. Instead, I use large ViseGrips, and wrap the jaws with tape. Then I put grease in the hole, and place the pin in position. I adjust the ViseGrips such that with the handles together, it will just barely push the pin in. I open the jaws, and press the pin. Then, another half turn on the knob and repeat. I keep doing this until the pin is almost flush. Then, with a block of wood under the lower tab (a pc of 2x4 on the work bench, I tap the pin flush with an ordinary carpenter's nail set. You cannot slip and scratch the receiver if you do this correctly, nor will you break off the tab on the receiver. The burr at the gas port is normal on a new barrel. It'll be gone the first time you shoot it. Sometimes you can see the gas port, if it ends up on a land, or you may not see it if it ends up in a groove. And it will look huge if it is half on the land, half in the groove. |

I got a JT kit last year and it was missing the hammer/trigger pins and all the bits for the bolt release. A phone call got them on the way, but it is dissapointing to wait for a kit, and then have to wait another week or so for the rest of the parts. I have put together many parts groups and there is a fail safe way to do it so no parts are ommited. However, JT does not seem to have a working solution. Regards, Ray |

I strtongly feel I need to add this to the discussion. When the parts kit arrive, you should have a printed diagram of all of the parts already waiting. You can copy it from this website. You then need to match up the parts to the printed diagram to make sure you have all of the parts and you understand which part is which, as some look somewhat alike. For example, there are two roll pins, one for the trigger guard and one for the bolt release. They are different sizes. Trying to put the large pin in the small hole is a problem, as it will not fit. Sound familiar? DO NOT JUST START PUTTING PARTS TOGETHER!!!!!!!!! You need to know what you have and what you may not have. You need to understand what goes where and when to put it there. And yes, occasionally parts will be missing. I know J&T, they will gladly send any missing parts to you without question. Patience little man, you waited months to order the parts, you cna wait another few days to do it right. After a couple of builds, you will have a better understanding of what is involved in building the AR and can do it blindfolded. This is a firearm, a very dangerous machine when not used correctly, and potentially dangerous when not assembled correctly. Understand what you are doing, then do it. |

Don't worry J&T will take care of you , this sort of thing happens with all companys . Also here is a little trick for the bolt catch install hope it helps . -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's a little tech. that might help , requires no punch at all for bolt catch install . Put about 4 layers of masking tape on side of reciever from the pin boss all the way back . Hold pin in place with needle nose pliars , place a small ball peen hammer right down on the taped area . The reciever there for steadys the hammer so all you have to do is slide it back and forth tapping the pin in . This is with the reciever laying on its side and it helps to have someone hold it still . Once you start the pin you can put down the pliars and guide the bolt catch for pin alignment as you tap . Remove the tape and you are done , practacly no chance of scratching the reciever . I have done three with this method and it is incredably quick & easy , hope this helps . IceMan |

seems to be common for JT to leave something out. I bought a kit at a show from them (my first one) and it was missing an item....just call them up, they will ship the same day almost always. The next kit I bought (at the next gun show) had all the parts. No problems. A little disheartening that they have this happen a bit....but the guys there are great to work with. I have begun buying extras of all the small parts to have lying around just in case I am missing something and if you accumulate lots of parst, one day they make a whole. Essayons |

Ok, I must follow up and say that while I am still disappointed that J&T forgot the parts in the first place, I talked to them Monday morning and they were very pleasent and appologetic and immidiately shipped out the parts. While their initial QC leaves a little to be desired, their customer service is excellent. -John |
+1 Download a good instruction file as it is easy to mess up springs on this.

| I also had missing parts in my lower kit, 4 total - bolt catch, bolt catch buffer, and trigger and hammer pins. They were good at getting them replaced, but I agree it's frustrating. With the amount of kits these guys sell, you would think they would have it down to a science. |
