I am planning my next build, and I want to build a heavy barrel long range shooter.  Which A3 type upper do I need?  Standard or highrise?  Why?  What are the advantages of one over the other?  Thanks in advance

I would use a standard A3 upper and get some Leupold AR15 Mk IV rings.  These rings put the scope at the proper height and you can get them in 1" or 30mm.

I would stay away from the high rise upper but that is just MHO.  Some people like 'em.

Any good quality regular flattop and a Larue SPR/M4 mount should work.

Unless you have some huge front bell or a really fat head you probably won't need a hi-rise.  A standard A3 will tend to be stiffer than a hi-rise.

Not everyone wants to use a $195 scope mount, there are many fine alternatives for less money, you can get a high rise mount for $45 from ADCO Firearms, or use a riser and standard rings.

Standard rings on a regular flat top position the scope too low.

I went through the same decision recently, and figured I could always make a flattop higher, but I couldn't make a high-rise lower.  I like flexibility, so that was that.

Stick with the standard flattop.

6.5 Grendel for that long distance stuff...

Not first hand experience, but the ballistics look good.

Flat top, so you can mount optics with ease.
