I don't have any special tools (maybe that' my problem) but how do I remove a Colt buffer tube so I can add a different stock?  I know what needs to be done but can't break that tube free and don't want to scratch it up any more than necessary.  Thanks.

Assuming you mean a rifle buffer tube...  they can be really tight.  best thing to do is wrap lower in a towel, and lightly put it in a vise, then put a wrench on the flats milled at the end of the tube.  Put your elbow in it, it will break free.

It's a Colt Carbine.  I think I'll need to take it up the road where a tool and die guy has all the tools.
I'm just rounding off that end area (castle nut?) with the big crescent wrench I was using.  Pipe wrench would be next but I want to keep the tube in good shape in case I sell it some day! I've put some liquid wrench on the threads and will wait until tomorrow to try and put on my new collapsible stock.  Thanks much.

Assuming it has a colapsable style stock, you need the stock wrench.
