I know this comes up all the time, but search didn't turn it up. What size o-ring do I want to put under the extractor, and which hardware stores carry them ?

LOWES, plumbing dept, mixed amongst the faucet repair stuff, a box of 10,   #60,  cost $1.27 I think it is.

GREAT... I'll run over there today. Thanks for the quick response.

People say its better to get Viton o-rings AS568A, -006, ID 1/8, OD 1/4, 1/16 wide, available at McMaster-Carr online.

I ordered a pack of 50 for something like $5... I'm set for life.

Do you put it around the spring?

Sure.  I actually used two of them at once on an AR10 that was having that problem where the extractor was losing control of the case during extraction.  Fixed it right up.

Is this worth doing as a "just in case"? In other words, I haven't had a fail to eject yet. Do you guys do this to minimize your risk or only to fix a problem?

I did it for both.  I had an M4 that was giving me problems.  This o-ring fixed it, and I then put them in all my ARs (16" and 20").  The extractor is a weak link in AR type rifles.

Plus Home Depot and Ace Hardware if those are more convenient.

Drop me an email with address also.  I'll send you a Viton double seal O-ring.  A little dial caliper research found these for me.  Since I bought a pack of 50, I have a few spares.

McMaster Carr Item Number:  6540 K117
Double Seal Viton O-Ring
AS568A Dash Number 007
Unit Price $10.96 PK

I got some from a local Ace Hardware Store. Their supplier was Servalite.
They didnt have the sizing system that eveyone here talks about (size #60 i belive). I picked up a few for a couple cents each..  5⁄32I.D. × 9⁄32O.D. Width: 1⁄16

Thanks Mongo for hooking me up with the size...

i was having problems with my ar pistol not extracting/ejecting the brass. i just test fired it after placing an "o" ring around the spring and what a difference it makes. 120 rounds without FTE

Ordered 50 of the Viton 006 o-rings yesterday. They even listed them as mil-spec and highly resistant to almost all chemicals.  They showed up on my door today. Installed them and now can not wait to go try them..

What is the right size for the Double Seal Viton O-Rings?  I see two listed here and I’m not sure which is the correct or better size?  Here's the sizes I got for 006 and 007 from McMaster Carr.

Edit to add:  I measured the extractor spring and here's what will fit the best...

007
5/32” X 9/32”
0.145” X 0.285”

Just placed an order from McMaster Carr.  50 O-rings should last a lonnng time.

Does anyone have a pic how that "O" ring should go on?

They just go around the extractor spring.

Part of learning is asking questions. Some may say the question or person asking the question is stupid  but that person to his or her credit is trying to learn. What is wrong with that. Its when you stop learning from others or you need to critize others is when you are "stupid".

I say ask the question and call me stupid if you like. Whatever!
