Swapped my CAR buffer 2.9 oz buffer for a 5.5 oz 9 mm buffer . Easy swap .... until pulling the charging handle back . It will not pull back far enough to chamber a round ! Put the stock buffer in ( to eliminate "my fault" error ) and it is fine . Any clues what would cause this ? FWIW I want to use the 9mm buffer .

Yes ! that is why this is stumping me . Everything else the same except the buffer itself ....or am I "supposed" to change the spring too ??

VERY strange.  Is the buffer the same length as the other one?  Your CAR action spring should be between 10 1/16" and 11 1/4" long.

Yes the spring is in that range . I am noticing now that the spring is very tight on the 9 buffer , appears that  there is some binding going on . I would think that the carrier should still move rearward even so . I gues it is possible that the spring is to small in diameter . I did try pushing the 9 buffer in/upper open with a cleaning rod and it works that way , but not when closed ?   I've tried searching the FAQ's in the Troubleshooting section but the links all go original page . Appreciate the help much .

No idea what might be your problem but I did notice this. I bought two different types of 9mm steel buffers. One is the 2 piece type and the other a one piece. Regular springs would bind on both of mine because of the inside size of the spring and the outside size of the buffer. I bought some of the chinese springs and they were bigger on the inside and did not bind.

Did you also have the carrier movement problem ? If so , that is the solution .

I have a bunch of CAR action springs laying around, if you can mic the inside diameter of your present spring and your buffer, where the spring snaps onto it I can see if I have one that'll work and send it to you free of charge.

Whoa cool , the CAR spring I.D. is .770 and the 9 mm buffer shank is .780 ....?  hmmm wonder what the problem is        .  I 'll email with an addy ( sure you don't want offsetting S&H funds ? )  and Thanks !

Found one that'll work.  This one is gauging right at .780 I.D. with my cheapy mic.  Don't worry about the cost off the shipping, it's on me.  I'll sent it out tomorrow morning USPS Priority mail.

I had the same problem with a 9mm buffer. The bolt carrier would only retract about 3/4 of the way back. The 9mm buffer was found to be out of spec. It was replaced with another 9mm buffer, and everything worked as it should.

Could you possibly get a measurement of your nondefective buffer ?
