Hi Guys,

I purchased a used barrel 2 months ago and just got around to giving it a good look over. Someone has given the barrel feed ramp extensions and did a really piss poor job. It looks to me like they have removed to much of the 6 o’clock lug, it even appears the lug has 2 small chips on the back side where it locks with the bolt.

How hard is it to change the barrel extension? this barrel will be used with a low profile gas block so it does not have to be perfect no front site tower needed. Can anyone recommend a good gunsmith for doing the extension swap? Do you guys think he can get the head space right?

Thx for your help.

It would probably cost you more then the barrel is worth (unless it's a Colt).

Did you buy it off the EE?

When a barrel is built, the barrel extension is torqued on, then the gas port is drilled properly indexed with the extension alignment pin.

Swapping extensions can be a major pain because there is no standard thread start on either the barrel or extension, so installing a new barrel extension will likely NOT be properly indexed with the existing gas port and/or your barrel stampings when torqued.

You can install a new extension, abandon your old gas port by filling/welding it over and drilling/reaming a new gas port properly indexed with your new extension alignment pin location.  If you have barrel stampings, they will no longer be at the top of the barrel.

Edited to add:  There is a special extension installation/torquing tool that costs about $60 that has to be used when installing/torquing/removing the extension.
