I am 90 percent sure I want to do a Tannery Shop lower but I want to do a cheap casting before possibly messing up a forged one.  I have heard that there are #1, 2, and 3 grade castings so what is the difference?  What makes a #2 or #3 cheaper than a #1 grade casting.  If I get a #3 grade and it turns out ok I would want to keep it but  is it dangerous?  Are there air pockets in the metal on a #3 to make it structurly weak or does it just look ugly and flawed?

From what I understand the differances in the grades are mainly cosmetic. You can get a really cheap practice receiver if you are that worried you will screw it up. Get yourself a drilling jig, a drill press and good vice and you shouldn't have a problem if you go slow. The cast receivers are known to be severly out of spec and you will end up making more work for yourself getting everything to fit. 80% receivers aren't  going to be a cheap way to build your own so spring for a forged one. Goofd luck.
