I am in the process of building an AR, mainly for 3 gun. I have a Rock River stripped lower enroute. I am still on the fence as far as primary optic, barrel length and handguards/rail system. That said I am planning on having a cromed barrel, standard A2 sight base w/bayonet lug, and a standard A2 flashhider/compensator (unless I go with a 14.5" which will get a perm. Vortex or Phantom flashhider).
I already have a ACE SOCOM stock and the Rock River stipped lower (at least the RRA lower is on order), I also have a BUIS, the mil. issue Knights 300m that I will use because it is on hand.
I am planning on ordering a J&T kit for parts ( I will end up with some left over but that isn't a bad thing) and for the lower "innards" I will just use the stock parts. I am considering a Tango Down pistol grip but the standard will work just as well.  The upper will be a flat top, I am going with a teardrop forward assist instead of the round because I like it better, and am considering a chromed bolt and carrier. Is the chromed bolt and carrier worthwhile?
I am considering a McFarland one-piece gas ring, is this worthwhile? I am not worried about the cost, are there any negatives to it?
How about the Redi-mags? I know two years ago before I stopped shooting they were popular and we even sold a bunch to one of the teams here on Bragg. I know the two big negatives are that you can drop your fully loaded spare if you aren't paying attention and if you aren't paying attention you can easily insert your mag in the wrong slot. Any comments on the Redi-mags?
As for a sling I am planning on a Spectre Mout sling.
Thanks listening, any comments on barrel length and handguard options would also be appreciated. I am mainly using this for 3 gun/plinking rifleand the only things I might hang off it are a pistol grip (We never had them when I was in the Army so I don't have much expericence with them, and a flashlight. Is it worth messing with a rail system for just the light and maybe the forward grip?

Stick with the ABCs.  Armalite Bushmaster or Colt.  The garage shops buy their parts from whoever's selling them cheap this week and they aren't the same two weeks running.

The Eagle Arms parts are from Armalite by the way.

i have a jt kit and its good quality stuff.

with the chrome carrier and stuff i wouldnt bother getting that stuff unless your ballin and dont know what to spend your money on.

i have no opinion about the redi-mag.

and if your not having any problems with the gas system i wouldnt mess with it. so i see no need for the gas rings you speak of.

and for the majority of things i tend to stick to bushmaster stuff.

Thanks for the feedback. I have dealt with J&T in the past and have had good luck but the advice on sticking with the big names makes sense. I managed a gunshop/range for a few years and all the ARs built were with DPMS lowers and J&T parts with little to no problem.
I have never had a problem with keeping my gas rings seperated or had a big problem keeping my bolt and carrier clean I just figured I would ask about the chromed bolt and the one piece gas rings. I think you are right and I can save the money there.
Thanks.
