Anyone use Alumahyde on their AR's?  Seems like a simple process.  How is the durability and such?

I used Brownells' teflon-moly stuff on a couple of AK builds and that stuff definitely looks like paint.  I doubt Alumahide is any better.

I used Norrell's on a 80% AR10 (over anodizing) and was very pleased.  Its very thin and flat.

gunkote is also a very thin and optically flat coating....does NOT look like paint.

THe process is simple enough, given the correct equipment.. We use a cheap airbrush and toaster oven to bake it.

(all parts of an AR will fit in a toaster oven (excluding the barrel)...just in case you were wondering.  works great.

I do not have any experience with alumahyde however.

I applied some Alymahyde to a rifle a week ago. So far it seems pretty decent. I haven't had a chance to fire the rifle yet, but seems to hold up better than paint so far...

Does the Alumahyde look like paint?

I'm at work now. But as soon as i get home, i'll take some pics for ya. It kinda looks like a dark black parkerizing sort of.

The rifle had actual black glossy shit paint on it.

It looks much better

Pics:

Mag is regular parkerization.

Upper and lower have been applied with Alumahyde II. Bottom has had some CLP applied to it. Top is still untouched. Trigger, bolt, and rear sight are blued..pending a range trip to test the functionality of that 50 rounder, the mag, trigger, and sight will be painted.

Here's a closer pic. You can see there's no gloss at all on the top, and a very dull glow from the CLP applied lower.  Jsut liek any parked AR receiver... very dull, with a bit different shade once oil or CLP's been applied.

I did my Ace with Alumahyde. The finish came out very well.
