Never owned an AR before, but am anxious to build one of my own.  I'd like something in the 16'' barrel length, collapsable stock, etc...

All I really need to buy is a lower and parts kit (I'd prefer this as it sounds like there are better triggers to be had with pre-assembled lowers),, or an assembled lower, and assembled/complete upper,  correct?   Then just add the type of stock and rails I want?

I'm confident enough that I could build it myself, following the instructions provided on this site.  I've built a couple 10/22's, and take down SKS's to clean the cosmo crap off them.   Also am mechanically inclined (do all auto/bike work at home) and if there are instructions I'll be ok.

One thing that has me confused is the amount of different receivers out there.  Is one recommended over another, and will a parts kit be interchangeable between the various brands.  It also looks like one the EE board there is a complete lower kit available for about 200 bucks shipped,  cheaper for members.  I'd like to do it myself to get familiar with the gun, but is this kit worthy of grabbing up?

Lowers not particular order.

Mega
Stag Arms
Ameetec Arms

All are around $90 stripped. Parts kits can be had for about $5X.00 depending on the time you look at them.

Higher dollar lowers are

Colt
Bushmaster
Rock River Arms
DPMS

They are about $110+ or so stripped

Stocks....Depends on what collapable you want

They can run you about $70 or up

I built mine for $220 + the cost of the FFL transfer.

It was an Ameetec Arms stripped with an Ameetec Arms parts kit and a RRA M4 6 position

My second lower that's in transit is a Stag Arms stripped with a RRA Parts kit and a RRA M4 6 position stock.

They are very easy to assemble. If you can wrench a motor you can build a lower IMO.

I grew up with a mechanic father working with my hands so it came very easy to me.

My last AR build

RRA LOWER
RRA UPPER/WITH CROME LINED BARREL
RRA LOWER PARTS KIT
RRA STOCK

TOTAL IN GUN $500.00

ALL ITEMS BOUGHT OFF EE BOARD

YOU WILL ALWAYS NEED MORE> KEEP OFF THE BOARDS AND IT WILL SAVE YOU A LOT OF MONEY> EVERTIME I LOOK I BUY. KNOW I WONT TO PUT ANOTHER $500.00 IN SIGHTS< SCOPES, HADNGAURDS, PISTOL GRIPS ECT.

GOOD LUCK

Scary huh?  I remember reading a post from a member that said something like "never thought that I would hurry home after work to see what is posted on the EE"

Glad that I cannot access this site from the office
