Is it possible to do this? Or should I just keep my eye out for a SP1

I just sold one of my houses and make some decent $$ off it. I want to get my dad something to thank him for voting this year. He usually doesnt but this year I begged him to and he voted for W. So as a thanks I want to get him an AR as close to what he had in Nam in 67.

Are there parts available to build something like that?

The parts are out there if you look for them. I am building my own SP1-ish type rifle. The supply of USGI uppers has dried up for now. Your best bet is the Colt SP1 upper sold by CDNN Investments. A fellow in the EE forums is selling A1 stock sets (USAF-K9). You might want to contact him and ask if you can purchase a buttstock and pistol grip. The SP1 upper comes with handguards. The A1 buttstock is a little bit shorter than the A2 buttstock. It also uses a different length of buffer/buttstock screw. I ordered my screw from numrich gun parts (e-gunparts.com). I haven't purchased a receiver yet.

If you don't want to bother with this rigamarole, you can buy a "Viet Nam" configuration AR15 from Fulton Armory (www.fulton-armory.com).

Thr "SP1" uppers being sold by CDNN are actually M16A1 uppers, so they will fit any of the currently available lowers w/o any mods

I have no idea why CDNN keeps referring to them w/the SP1 designation, but they definitely are not the big hole SP1 type. They are takeoffs from brand new rifles that were apparently being upgraded to A2 configuration.

Ekie,

Those could be the best clone photos I've seen here, they are very nice.

I wouldn't bother.  He is selling this stuff cheap.(I bought some, they are the best early furniture sets I've seen!) Triangle handguards are always hard to find in new condition.  I'd keep the extra set as a spare.

Thanks, was a fun project.  Working on a early 60's clone now, those parts are much harder to find.

Here's my SP1 clone.  Basic large hole slabside SP1 upper, three prong flash hider, triangle forearm guard, A1 furniture, generic lower.

If you are intrested in replica model 01 parts e-mail me.  I have some and know where they can be found.  The real ones are hard to find.

Ekie,
Long time, no see!

Absolutely lovely A1.....just like my '83 Army issue.

I keep thinking that I'm gonna build one some day.

Thanks for posting that,
Brad

Well, my 8yo son encouraged me to take up a hobby that I've wanted to do since my own boyhood; radio control airplanes.

We've immersed ourselves in radio control planes as our main hobby for a while now.

However since the end of the Klinton ban, we've gotten a renewed interest in the new & interesting things that have become available & the prospects of what new things may come out soon.

Hope all has been good with you & yours.   Good talking to you again :),
