Hi guys.  Ive been planning to do a build with one of these uppers, but have read some contradicting info on expected accuracy from them.  I am aware than when these pencil barrels heat up, the POI changes.  How long do these take to heat up?  Does POI change after 5 rounds, or after 500 rounds?  What kind of groups can one expect at 100 yards?  Thanks for your help.

POA vs POI shift is going to depend on how quickly you are firing, which equals out to how fast you are heating up the barrel.  Groups at 100 yards are going to depend more on the level of skill of the shooter, than it is anything else.  The M16 series is a combat weapon, that happens to be quite accurate, but still is not designed to be a match grade rifle.

In the real world, most of us are happy to shoot open sights and keep a 4" group (@ 100 yards)when firing a magazine.  There are obviously people who can do much better, but most people who post tiny group size are liars.  It is like the internet fishing story.

Look at it this way, the various branches of the military have fired KD out to 500 yards, and engaed targets without any problem (no letting barrels cooling down either).  A long long time ago, in basic training, I fired a perfect score with a M16A1 that was in horrible shape.

The moral of the story is that the weapon will do its part if you will.

I hope this helps a little.

Unless you're planning on competitive target competition, the A1 barrel will do you just fine, accuracy wise. In fact, the A2 barrel is exactly the same dimensions behind the front sight. It's only heavier out front, which is the barrel part least affected by heat, re the POI.

The big "disadvantage" of the A1 barrel is the 1in 12 twist, rather than the 1 in 7 or 1 in 9 twist (commercial models) of the A2 types. This confines you to the use of 55 grain or lighter bullet ammo (which is all I shoot anyway)

Man these guys have just about summed it up perfectly.  If you are going to build a flat-top upper with optics.... float the barrel, and then use a M16 pencil barrel.... you *might* not be happy with the results you get... if you were expecting sub-MOA.  However, as a shooter, using the iron sights, they are great.
