After receiving the USA Franken Mags, this project is finally marked complete.  Started with a Colt 7.62 Sporter carbine upper; Colt A2 upper receiver replaced with an A3 flattop; DPMS 7.62x39 bolt assembly; Mega Gator Cal. Multi striped lower receiver; DPMS lower parts kit. Makes soda bottle dance at 100 yd.

SWEET!

I've been "trying" to get a 7.62x39 upper for a while now, but I end up spending the $$$$ on other projects.  I have tons of mags (frank-in mags non the less), but no upper.

edit-
Might I inquire on how much the mags ran?

No. Sorry if I made you think they are making Franken mags again. I just end up bought used ones on the EE board. Paid big bucks for them but they are worth every penny.

No prob.  FYI- Well, last year, I paid between $36-50 for the hybrid mags....and this was on the auction sites.

Personally I think $30-$45 is still a fair price. I looked into making my own Franken, it will cost around $20 for parts if not more.

I have some of the "other" 7.62x39 Ar mags, the ones that look like 223.  I suppose that a few bucks in 7.62x39 AK mags won't be bad.  Just a matter of looking how the USA and those other hybrid mags I have look like.  (The 223 type 7.62 mags are not suppose to work very well.... a canidate for hacking I would say....)

Heck, I've got a mig welder here, cut off saw, mechanical hack saw and a dremel w/ a cut off blade adapter.  The challenge seems inviting......

I have put some thought into this, you will have to make the seam where the two mags join match up perfect so that the follower will not hang up when it passes thru or the ammo for that matter. It's going to be tricky!

Here's what I just heard from DPMS:

We do have these mags available at the current time. The are in the same configuration as the G-Tec mags.  The MSRP is $49.95.
IF you have any questions feel free to contact us,

Thank you,

Subject: high cap 7.62x39 AR15 mags

I heard on some online firearm forums that DPMS will have high cap 7.62x39 mags for AR15. Is it true? Will they be G-Tech copies with metal followers? When will they be available and how much?

They don't work as well. I bought two, one jammed every other round, one jammed every 5-10 rounds and both not drop free.

How about a range report... I have an extra lower laying around it would be cool to make it a 7.62x39 if the Franken mags work. Then I'd sell my SAR since I don't shoot it.

It's been raining a lot so have not get to shoot paper target. It does hit a soda bottle just fine at 100 yards last time at the range. I'm sure it's more accurate than an AK. I read at least once here on the board that people shot 1-1.5 MOA with their 7.62 upper.

Just came back from the range, shot 2" group with EOTech and Wolf ammo.

That's better accuracy than a SAR.

That was my best group, not an average. Now I got some Cheeta brass cased ammo, may be I can do a bit better next week at the range.

Ar15seeker i would like to add nice job on your weapon it looks awesome i envy you. I bought  a couple of the cheaper than dirt 20 round steel mags mine jam every time i try to fire if i put the 20 rounds in them but if i but 15 or 16 in them and only 15 or 16 they work like a dream. I also purchased 30 round mags the oralite plastic mags. they work very well i have a problem with snaping them in and getting them to stay in you got to hit the damn thing kinda hard.

Thanks. I did not know Orlite can hold more than 5 rounds of 7.62x39. Anyways, I paired an Orlite with my pistol project, picture with Orlite towards the bottom of page 1, ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=4&t=212343
