How difficult is it to remove the front sight on an AR-15?  I ask because I would like to remove my front sight and put a gas block on it.  I want to add a flip up front sight so I won't have to co-witness the front irons when I have a red dot or scope attached.

Thanks in advance,
Wes

I'm assuming that you don't have access to an arbor press, right?

In that case, you'll need a solid bench, a 1/4" or larger brass/copper punch, and a 2-3 pound hammer. ADCO also sells a bench-block/jig that makes it a lot easier.

1. Get your upper positioned so that the FSB is SOLIDLY supported.

2. Using the hammer and brass punch, FIRMLY strike the small end of the pin. (The pins are tapered and can only go one way.) It may take a few whacks (sometimes quite a few), some of them can be very stubborn. Use a brass punch so that if the punch slips off, you won't scratch the finish. Once you have the pin loosened and driven flush with the FSB, use the appropriate steel punch to push the pin out of the FSB. Repeat.
I sometimes soak the FSB down with penetrating oil a day or two before I'm ready to work on the upper.

A solid bench and a big hammer are you best friends in this process.  Once you have the FSB properly supported, don't be afraid to hit it hard!  The ADCO jig isn't necessary, but sure makes things easier, especially if the pins are frozen.
