I'm building up a AR-15 A1 Circa 1969.  I have the upper complete, now I'm wondering, did the grunts in the field carry ArmaLites or Colts?  For temporary reasons the lower will be mounted on my Olympic, but I'd like to make this as historically accurate as possible.  Granted I won't have an Auto Sear in there, but I want to be as close to field issue as possible.  Also where's the best place to find the correct lower.

Colts. Air Force may have had a few Armalites, but manufacturing rights were sold to Colt late 50's early 60's......
I'm not aware that Colt made any A1 contour semi auto lowers, but there may be a relative few that were let out in 1985 or so.

There were three M16A1 makers in the '60s; Colt, Harrington and Richardson, and GM. If you want an exact copy of the piece, you'll have to use a lower by someone other than Colt, because the ARs Colt was making back then were the SP1s, and they have a totally flat side lower without the push pin front that the M16s had.

With all the GI surp M16 and M16A1 upper stuff out there these days, this is a good time to do an early copy. I've built up an Air Force M16 copy, complete w/an original unnotched, chromed bolt carrier/bolt assy, and an Army M16A1 copy in the past two years or so.

The lowers are the only hassle.  Most of us poor guys are just using currently produced lowers, which don't exactly match the profile of the originals, at the rear end. I keep agitating for someone to bring out a copy of the original profile lower, but no success yet

ok thanks for the info, looks like I might be SOL for a lower.  That sucks too, becaus I already completed the upper, now I'm just waiting till Sept to slap the lower on it and call it good.
