I have found a Colt pre ban lower that has a small hole above the safety selector lever. I have tried to find out what this is for and guess it is for a sear. Can I have this lower with correct Ar15 trigger, hammer ect but no sear and it be legal? I won't buy it if it is an issue. Thanks |
Before you panic, there are holes, then there are holes. Colt used a couple of different sear blocks at least. One where there was only one hardened pin driven through the receiver into the block, and another that used two pins, one on each side. With the latter example, the sear block pins are much larger (Approximately half the diameter of the selector shaft, as I remember not having an example in front of me at the moment) than the autosear type pins, which are smaller than your hammer and trigger pins. At any rate, if the holes are tiny, it's probably a no-no. If fairly large, then someone just removed the sear block, which is perfectly legal. Do a little research, and you can find pictures of an M-16, showing the size of the autosear pin and you'll then know for sure. Lonny |
| Please excuse my lack of knowledge on pre bans and Colts. I have a postban bushy M4. The lower in question has little holes directly over the selector. It is stamped AR15 Hbar Sporter so did Ar15's ever have an auto sear. Can I fill in the holes and refinish it and have a legal lower. The selector hole has just safe and fire stamped on it nothing showing auto. This is a puzzle to me and don't want to make a mistake. Thanks |
| I was finally able to find a close up picture of an M16 lower and the holes are the same. I was excited because this Colt Ar15 lower is in a garage sell for $50. I asked the guy to hold it for me until I got more info. Now I can tell him he needs to get rid of it. Damn on ebay there is 5 complete pre ban Colt uppers up for sale and I had a dream for my first build. |
You buy that $50 lower and your dream could become a nightmare
